October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas, and Doherty Library is showcasing a Czech display this month in collaboration with the Houston Czech Center Museum.
2018 marks the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia, and the display features Czech history and Texas’ Czech heritage, along with related miscellania, from Czech puppetry to UST study abroad opportunities in the Czech Republic.
According to the display, Czech migration to Texas began in the 1850s, when Arnost Bergmann settled in Austin County. Czech culture had a lasting influence on Texas through numerous organizations, publications and events.
The display, which has been held at Doherty Library for more than 20 years, is hosted each year by the Rev. Paul Chovanec, UST class of ‘68.
“Over the last 20 years or more, the library staff has always been gracious and hospitable, and I enjoy developing the exhibit,” Chovanec said.
